Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and “spider veins.” Spider veins are small, thin red or purple colored tiny veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. Many factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including weight, heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts. Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins. It's often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar and collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.

The preferred sclerotherapy solution, or sclerosant, at Acacia Dermatology is Asclera® (polidocanol). It works better than obsolete sclerosants such as hypertonic saline.

After sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take up to a month to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed. Dr. Chen and his aesthetic team are experts in treating spider veins and will determine if sclerotherapy is a good option for you.

We are happy to discuss your aesthetic options to see if sclerotherapy with Asclera® is right for you. For a free consultation on leg veins, call Acacia Dermatology & Laser Center at 855.269.7546 (toll-free) or 931.762.6545
